bible record of Anna Kelly who married allen flinn or Flynn. She was the first born child of Andrew Kelly and his wife, dolly coleman, my 4th great grandparents. Listed are the birthdates of anna, her siblings, mother, and birth year of her father. anna's brother, Joshua was born june 15, 1805--my 3rd great grandfather.
copy of this bible record kindly sent to me by sam miller several years ago
I make note of the names on the births recorded by anna (Kelly) Flinn. why did andrew and dolly give these names to their children? traditionally, people named their children after their ancestors, siblings and close friends who were often kin. sometimes, they named them after counties they were born in. if andrew was, indeed, born in north carolina and came through kelly/kelley's gap in greene county, tennesse before moving north to kentucky, then the name green makes sense. but, what about hardin, wiley & speed? who were joshua, james, turner and daniel named for? and who were elvina, delila and morniso named for? is dolly a nickname for delila? the name which looks like morniso has been reported in other family trees as morning or mourning. again, who in the family also had that name?

dolly coleman

as you can see in the 1860 census for estill co., ky pictured above, dolly (not polly) is living with her son, Speed S. Kelly and his family. this is documentation that she is died sometime after 18 Aug 1860 when this census was taken. you can also see that, sometimes, names and other data are not transcribed accurately. if i were searching for dolly kelly or speed kelly, i'd have a more difficult time finding them as their names have been transcribed as polly and spicain the index for the census. I ran my search for Kelly or Kelley, 1860 estill county, kentucky and found them.

andrew kelly is said to be the son of john patrick kelly and anna hunter who married about 1775 in north carolina. john is said to have been born in ireland about 1750. When did he arrive in north carolina? did he arrive as a child or as a grown man? anna hunter is said to have been born 1754 in scotland or ireland. when did she arrive? who were her parents and siblings? who were john's?
jonathan kelly was born about 1760 in grayson, virginia. he married patience spencer who is said to have been born june 7, 1770 in lee county, virginia. jonathan's parents are also said to be john born about 1750 and anna hunter born about 1754 in scotland. if that is true, then the dates are off by about 10 years as it is extremely doubtful that john and anna had Jonathan when they were around 10 yrs of age and younger. we need more kelly/kelley males to take dna tests to help us sort this all out.
john and patience moved to madison county, kentucky where daniel boone had built boonesborough. estill county was formed a few years later from madison county. Andrew and Dolly moved to Madison county by 1810.

andrew is listed on page 13 of this census. he has 3 males under 10, 3 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44 (Andrew), 4 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44 (Dolly), and a female 45 and over. Who is this older female? his mother? Dolly's mother? or someone else?
there is a john kelly listed on page 17 of the ravenna, estill co., ky census. john has 2 males under 10 and john is in the same age bracket as andrew (26-44 yrs). are they brothers? john also has a female under 10 and a female 26-44 who is probably his wife.
there is a william coleman living in ravenna, estill co., ky in 1820. he is found on page 3. he is over 44 yrs of age and he has a female living with him who is between 26-44. his wife? william also has a female slave between 14-25 yrs of age. is william the brother or father of dolly? as you can see, it is difficult to tell with an almost 20-yr range in the age bracket.
joshua moved away from estill co., ky and by february, 1835 he married my 3rd great grandmother, catherine "Kate" Ann Martin in cole county, missouri. A few years later, joshua bought land in nearby boone county where he and kate lived out the rest of their lives.
